Biotic components of marine ecosystems

Leader: Dr. Lech Kotwicki, Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences

The workshop will provide:

  1. Lecture – major marine habitat division including methods and techniques of studying
  2. Demonstrations sampling techniques (dredge net, bottom grab sampler, plankton net)
  3. Laboratory practical session – rough analysis of collected biological samples

Duration: 4 hours, including ~ 1h of theory lecture (marine habitat division, methods and techniques of studying) ~3h practical activities on board, including demonstrations of sampling techniques and work procedures in laboratory (r/v Horyzont)

Key issues:
–              Pelagic realm (primary producers, zooplankton)
–              Benthic realm (benthic algae, hard and soft bottom communities)
–              Food webs and key stone species (fish, birds, mammals)
–              Microbial loops and decomposition of matter
