Interdisciplinary Polar Studies

PhD programme
The Centre for Polar Studies offers young researchers from Poland and abroad a high quality PhD programme, which will be conducted primarily in English (and entirely in English for foreign students). Implementation of this new,  international PhD programme that is dedicated to polar studies is intended to in the academic year 2014/2015.
The aim of the Centre for Polar Studies (CSP) is to conduct advanced interdisciplinary studies of the Arctic and Antarctic environment and  training of young researchers.
The CSP combine high level research of polar areas with teaching and training of PhD students through joint seminars, lectures, practical workshops and participation in scientific projects.
The Centre together with the cooperating institutions will qualify a new generation of internationally competitive young scientists in the field of Earth sciences with a focus on high latitude land, ice and marine geosystems, ecosystems and polar climate change. PhD students will be prepared for taking over leading positions in research and education, or consulting, management and policy as well.

Currently, the ISP are held two years of PhD students affiliated to the Faculty of Earth Sciences University of Silesia, Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences, and also graduate students on Exploration of Polar and Mountain Regions (EOPG), the speciality of Geography at the University of Silesia.

Degree to be obtained: Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences, disciplines: Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Oceanology
Mode of study: full-time
Duration: 4 years (8 semesters), starting in October 2015
Language: English and Polish; knowledge of Polish is not obligatory for students from abroad
Deadline for submission of applications: 15th August 2015
Interviews : 10th –  13th September 2015 in the institute appropriate to the chosen discipline
In a case of candidates from abroad the interview might be performed in the form of video conferencing (after earlier arrangement).
Scholarship: EU citizens and owners of Card of the Pole can apply for scholarships funded by the KNOW (Leading National Research Centre) 2 000 – 4000 PLN/month
Tuition fees applicable: EU citizens applying on a regular basis – no fees; Non-EU citizens: 3 000 EUR per year; more information on the website http://admission.us.edu.pl/english/admission-rules
